If there’s one thing we all rely on and take completely for granted, it’s electricity. When the lights go out, few us have a reliable electrician we can trust to come out promptly to save the day (or night!). Without power, our lives are more than a little affected!

24 call out? On a bank holiday? Good luck!

Without gas or even water, we can make do for a surprisingly long time. We can use what water is in the tanks and cisterns, switch to immersion heating or use a microwave instead of our regular oven.

And while we can usually work around most things, without a working electrical connection, we’re considerably challenged!

OK, so for lights we can substitute candles and torches. In fact, that might even be fun for a while!

But what about the fridge and that freezer filled with expensive produce? Without electricity, many gas boilers won’t work, ironically, and the list goes on.

We can’t charge our mobile phones, our laptops, tablets, or use any of our technology. So that Netflix binge is on hold for the moment and goodbye Facebook! It’s like being stranded on a desert island! Well, almost.

Electricity is the unsung hero of our homes. This is why it’s amazing that when refurbishing a home or renovating a property, the electrics are often overlooked.

Regulations and safety standards are changing all the time, each of which is designed to keep us safe. Did you know that over 50% of fires in the home are caused by faulty domestic electrics?

The main cause is linked to cooking appliances. So, as we install the latest, greatest ovens and white goods in our homes, it’s vital that the power source and all connectivity is fit for purpose. The same is true for external connections such as outdoor lighting.

When was the last time you considered whether your consumer unit (fuse board) was up to the job?

Why is this important? Well, electrical fires are one thing, but did you know that your home insurance may be invalidated if you don’t keep your installation up to date? Most homes that suffer a fire require total refurbishment due to smoke and water damage. Imagine being told you have to foot the bill!

It’s not as if insurers need an excuse to wriggle out of paying out, so why give them ammunition?!

This doesn’t just apply to new homes or those that have been refurbished. If you have a fuse board that you haven’t seen for years because it’s buried in an under-stairs cupboard, or somewhere else out of regular view, we’re talking to you!

You’ll be pleased to know that at Parker Home, we’ve expanded our team and have full-time electricians ready to make your home safe and certified.
